Green Labs Austria

The Mission

  • Create Awareness
    • We want scientists to actively think about the resources used for their research
  • Build a Community
    • Things are always easier to achieve together, and we want to help you to do this.
  • Provide Information
    • We offer useful information to help scientists work more sustainably

We want to connect labs in Austria to reduce our carbon footprint.

Global warming represents one of the biggest threats to the well-being of mankind. Paradoxically, while scientific research is instrumental for solving the imminent climate crisis, our activities contribute significantly to anthropogenic climate change.

Green Labs Austria aims to connect laboratories in Austria that share the vision of a more sustainable research. We want to change the status quo of resource management and offer guidelines for a transition to more environmentally aware research practices. We hope to achieve this by collaborating with groups and institutions from various disciplines.

Specifically, we want to reform how labs and scientists think about energy consumption, plastic consumption, recycling and traveling

Green Labs Austria & Sustainable Research - The movie

We are happy to share this Green Labs Austria short movie with you!

Filmmaker and marine biologist Maria Pinto (@mcMariaSea) made this beautiful short film about the initiative Green Labs Austria. It was largely filmed on two days in April 2021, and visualizes green labs' commitment to making life science research sustainable.

Green Labs Austria is an initiative which was born by students and postdocs of the Schleper, Bulgheresi and Rittmann group, at Archaea Biology and Ecogenomics Unit.

Green Labs Austria aims to connect Austrian and international laboratories that share the vision of more sustainable research.

The initiative's aim is to serve as a platform for communication and discussion of green research practices among labs and as a database of relevant initiatives, associations and resources, both national and international. It also serves as the communication platform of the "Verein zur Förderung Nachhaltiger Forschung", a non-profit association that students, technicians and post-docs of the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology (FEE) founded to reform how scientists at the University of Vienna and beyond think about energy and plastic consumption, recycling and traveling.

Everyone is invited to contribute, by sharing their know-how and practical tips for sustainable lab organisation as well as opinions on all matters pertaining to the environmental impact of research.

Please share this initiative and the attached portfolio to your networks, visit, and get in touch at
