Archaea Ecology and Evolution

We are interested in Asgard archaea and their role in the evolution of eukaryotes as well as in ammonia oxidizing archaea and their function in the nitrogen cycle.

Our major projects currently include:

• cultivation and physiological and morphological studies of Asgard archaea
• the study of the Asgard archaeon, Ca. Lokiarchaeum ossiferum, by live cell microscopy
• ecophysiological and functional genomic studies of ammonia oxidizing archaea from soils, marine sediments and hot springs to reveal their role in nitrification
• the search for biological nitrification inhibitors for improved agricultural practices
