"DiSCo: a sequence-based type-specific predictor of Dsr-dependent dissimilatory sulphur metabolism in microbial data"

Congratulations to Sinje Neukirchen and Filipa Sousa for their new publication in Microbial Genomics!

"DiSCo: a sequence-based type-specific predictor of Dsr-dependent dissimilatory sulphur metabolism in microbial data"

In this study, Neukirchen and Sousa developed DiSCo, a Dsr-dependent dissimilatory sulfur metabolism classification tool able to automatically identify and classify the enzyme type from (meta)genomic data. DiSCo can analyze the protein space of a microorganism's genome in a matter of seconds and provides the metabolic predictions with high statistical support.

They further benchmarked DiSCo against over 190 thousand (meta)genomic assemblies and expanded the diversity of this pathway in prokayotes. This led to the identification of previously unknown lineages with the potential to use this metabolism for energy conservation.
