In April 2018 Ricardo successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "Linking the pylogeny of Thaumarchaea with their environmental and functional diversity". His PhD research aimed to characterise the relationships between phylogenetic, environmental and functional diversity of thaumarchaea, especially AOA, and the implications for their identification and role in nature.
