"Unexpected complexity of the ammonia monooxygenase in archaea"
The ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) is a critical piece of the nitrification process in both archaea and bacteria. In this paper, the authors found three new subunits unique to archaea correlated with known archaeal AMO subunits using independent proteomic, genomic, and transcriptomic approaches. These new subunits appear to replace missing pieces of the archaeal complex and further highlight the physiological differences between ammonia oxidizing archaea and ammonia oxidizing bacteria.
