Stefan Rahmstorf is Professor of Physics of the Oceans at Potsdam University and an award-winning oceanographer and climatologist. He was one of the lead authors of the 4th Assessment Report of the IPCC and the first scientist outside the US to be awarded the Climate Communication Prize of the American Geophysical Union.

After studying physics and physical oceanography at the Universities of Ulm, Konstanz and Wales (Bangor) Rahmstorf completed a thesis on general relativity theory and obtained his PhD in oceanography at Victoria University of Wellington.

He worked as a scientist at the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute, at the Institute of Marine Science in Kiel and since 1996 at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research.His work there focuses on the role of the oceans in climate change.

Rahmstorf has published over 130 scientific papers, several books and is co-founder of the blogs RealClimate and KlimaLounge.
