Archaeal cell cycle control

Abstract:

The cell cycle is the process by which a cell grows, copies its DNA and divides into new cells. This process is essential for all life, but we still know very little about how it is controlled in archaea. The ARC3 project will investigate how archaea regulate their cell cycle by identifying the molecular “switches” that turn genes on and off and control proteins involved in cell division. By uncovering these mechanisms in ecologically relevant archaeal lineages, including Lokiarchaea, the project will fill an important gap in our understanding of microbial biology and give insight into how eukaryotic life evolved.
